The bell tower that stands today was built in the 17th/18th century and is all that remains of the old Church of Santa Cristina. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed on May 11, 1809, by the troops of General Loison during the 2nd French invasion led by Soult. Worship was then moved to the chapel of the former solar of Picota.
In 2021, the tower located in the historic center of Mesão Frio was transformed into an urban viewpoint that can be accessed freely.
